It’s Not Me, It’s Definitely You: Breaking Up With TV Shows

I have a bad habit when it comes to television shows: Once I’m hooked, I’m all in — often until the very, very bitter end. This has provided my friends with many hours of amusement; I still remember their taunts about Vaughn’s pretty, pretty hair as I tried to sit through the last season of “Alias.”  I’ve since gotten my revenge on my boyfriend (who loved pointing out every single thing that series borrowed from his favorite 80s action movies) by moaning and groaning through the last two seasons of his favorite show, “24.” (I do admit to liking the finale, though.)

Sometimes, though, I just can’t take it anymore. For instance, I can’t enjoy a show when I can’t stand the protagonist (Hello, “Californication.”). I don’t break up with TV shows that often, but when I’m done, I’m done. I tried to break up with “24″ but I had a strange desire to see what craziness Jack Bauer would get sucked into next. The last show I checked out of midstream was “Heroes” — a series that I once loved so much that I rocked a “Petrelli for Congress” T-shirt. Let’s just say that my first FanStuff post was a bit cathartic. I have no idea how the series ended. How’s that for a clean break?

The latest television show that I’ve considered breaking up with is unfortunately one of my favorites. I’ve become a really big fan of the bucket o’crazy that is “True Blood,” but between the absolutely terrifying Tara-in-captivity storyline the show curiously played for laughs, that fairy dream sequence and that scene at the end of this season’s third episode, I’m not sure I want to stick around past this summer.  And that — pun definitely intended — would suck.

Have you ever broken up with a TV show? What was the last straw for you? Worse yet, have you resolutely seen a series through to the very end against your better judgment? Leave your “Why am I still watching this?!” stories in the comments!
